CUPPS delayed but Arinc ready
While the implementation of Common Use Passenger Processing Systems (CUPPS) across the airline industry has been delayed, Arinc says its CUPPS-compliant system is ready to roll out.
“We predicted that the CUPPS protocol would be ratified by around this time, but it hasn’t been – for two reasons,” explained Will Faas, Arinc’s senior product manager, airport systems. “One is the general state of the industry and the other is that one of the principles behind CUPPS is independent verification. This hasn’t happened because of disagreements among the main players and among customers.”
Faas noted that at a recent event in Las Vegas, an IATA representative stated that CUPPS is not a priority for airlines at present.
Elsewhere, Arinc has been working on other systems to try to move the industry away from fixed, expensive infrastructure within airports. “We’ve been looking at remote passenger processing, in places such as hotels, docks and convention centres,” reported Faas. “Such systems need to be very user-friendly as the staff required to use them are not trained in check-in systems such as those used at airport counters. They’ll also need to be able to operate with standard internet access.”
