New LCS named USS Cooperstown

The US Navy has named its next Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) USS Cooperstown (LCS 23), it announced on 26 July.

The USS Cooperstown will be built by a Lockheed Martin-led industry team, with a modular design to incorporate mission packages as per combat needs.

The mission packages will be supported by detachments that deploy manned and unmanned vehicles and sensors for mine, undersea and surface warfare missions. The LCS can perform missions such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare.

The LCS will have a length of 388ft and a maximum speed of more than 40 knots.
