Finland and Systematic collaborating on going international
On 4 January 2010, the Army Materiel Command Headquarters and Systematic A/S signed a significant new agreement regarding the supply of key software systems for use by the Finnish Defence Forces on international operations.
The objective is to provide Finnish Defence Forces with a range of advanced software-based command, control and communication capabilities configured to meet a wide range of their practical needs in the demanding context of international operations.
Information management
International operations involve the transfer of large amounts of oftensensitive information in many different directions, all at the same time.
Such operations involve Finland’s forces in fluid, multilateral operations, often at relatively short notice.
This requires complex coordination and communication with the lead nation in any particular operation. They also involve working with coalition partners that use a wide range of different equipment from different eras, as well as different data exchange procedures.
Ensuring best possible overview
Effective decisions rely on the best possible information. In such international operations, it is important for the Finnish Defence Forces and their command structures to maintain clear, up-to-date situational awareness, so they can react effectively to changing circumstances.
The agreement with Systematic is therefore intended to provide Finnish command structures with the best suitable COP (Common Operational Picture), updated in real time and with maximum data transparency.
Full spectrum of requirements
As a result of this contract, Systematic will be supplying the Finnish Defence Forces with a broad spectrum of advanced software products. These will include SitaWare HQ, SitaWare Battle Management, SitaWare Track Server and IRIS, NFFI and MIP interoperability tools.
These can be used together and combined seamlessly, to provide the exact ‘flavour’ of situational awareness that the Finnish Defence Forces need – and expect – in any given operational context.
Trials and exercises
The preliminary plan is to roll these into operational use in autumn 2010. During the trials and exercises, Systematic will provide comprehensive training for all the systems used by the operational Finnish Defence Forces staff taking part.
