The US Military has received the 2,000th AN/PLM-4 Radar Signal Simulator (RSS) from Exelis, the company announced on 12 January.

The AN/PLM-4 is designed to test radar warning receivers on various military aircraft during ground testing. It simulates the electronic signals generated by various threats the aircraft could face in a hostile environment.

The 2,000th AN/PLM-4 RSS was provided to the US Air Force as part of a task order from a previously awarded indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract. Exelis recently announced the award of a $6.3 million order from the same IDIQ contract

The AN/PLM-4 has also been delivered to other branches of the military and international customers over the course of the 2,000 deliveries.

The RSS is a portable radar simulator that tests radar warning receivers, electronic surveillance measures and electronic countermeasures systems. The system tests the detection and identification capabilities of fixed and rotary wing aircraft and can also be used for testing systems on surface ships, submarines and land vehicles against the latest hostile threats.

Testing can be conducted on pods, on-board self-protection electronic countermeasures systems, radar warning receiver systems and electronic warfare support measures systems. The self-contained unit is small in size, operates by battery or external AC power and can be carried and operated easily by an individual.
